Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is the process of editing a websites structure and various other elements on and off that websites pages with the aim of achieving better rankings on the major search engines, namely MSN, YAHOO and Google. Ultimately just getting better rankings isnt enough you need more visitors and this depends highly on the key phrases that you rank for.

A search engines organic results are typically found on the left hand side of the (SERPs) search engines results page (see diagram 1.1). Users will generally only view the first one or possibly two pages so it is essential that this is where your website can be found for your key phrases. Each SERP will include  10 natural  results each result made up of a Title, Description and a URL (see diagram 1.2).

According to Google over 200 on and off page variables are taken into account when they rank a web page. Some examples of these are:
Title tag
Meta Descriptions
Page Content (copy and images)
Inbound Links
Image Alternative Text
Internal Link Structure
Age of Domain
Page names

The list is endless. For a good idea of what to keep in mind when design, developing or optimising your website read this excellent article on the Search Engine Ranking Factors.(link to seomoz)

When we optimise a website for a search engine we will initially make sure all your pages have been indexed (been visited by Googles bot and are included in Googles results). Then we will determine what keywords are highly searched and relevant to your industry, product or service. Finally we will optimise your pages to include these keywords in a natural and logical way. These keywords will need to be well aligned and distributed throughout your content.
